| History of Koi
|
Koi
are as you may already know, are descendants of carp. The word
"Koi" was first used about 2,500 years ago in China. Koi
fish have been used in Chinese artwork and carvings and some Chinese
rulers kept carp in captivity for their viewing pleasure. Breeding of
carp for color patches did start in China. The Japanese rice farmers
did use them for food and began to breed some for beauty. Much of the
credit goes to the Japanese as the creators of Nishikigoi, or as we
call them, Koi or Living Jewels. |

Tip
|
Whenever
moving a fish to a quarantine tank, be sure the water quality and temperature
are the same or very close. This is a time that the fish needs no
additional stresses. An 8 degree difference in water temp. can be just
the thing to push the fish over the edge. |

and or scratching the pond sides:

|
Usually
an
indication of a recent change in the water. If some water was replaced
or added. Consider checking the chemicals and adjust as needed. If
this continues, then consider the possibility of flukes. If jumping,
then test water and adjust if needed and watch fish more. If jumping continues,
then Flukes is more likely. Visit www.KoiVet.com
for more detailed Koi illness, symptoms and remedies. |
| One
fish looses its appetite. |
If
all the other fish are feeding fine with exception to one, usually
this happens when a fish is ill and is progressively getting worse.
Consider getting a Quarantine tank ready if you feel the fish is
needing treatment. |
| Fish
is nose down and tail up. |
Clearly
an indication that the fish is stressed and not doing well. Add Salt
right away or quarantine and add salt. Consider getting the salt level
to 0.3% during a 24 hour time frame. Adding 1 lb. per 100 gallons will
increase the salt level to 0.1%. 12 hours later, add another 1%, then
repeat again in 12 hours. This should bring you to 0.3%. |
| Determining Gender |
Male
fish |
Male
Koi tend to be more slender then females. Males do most of the chasing
during breeding season. Males also have a rougher skin under the lower
jaw after 2 years of age. Similar to a male humans face after a day of
not shaving. |
| Female
fish |
Shape
is more round along sides. Females are often the ones being chased
during breeding season. No need to be alarmed if you witness males
pushing the female around. One or more males are attempting at forcing her
eggs out so that they may fertilize them. |
