 Poly-Flo Pond Filter Material

Poly-Flo filter media is very popular for usage in Koi pond filters. Course is perfect for barrel bio filters.  ** We are NO LONGER offering Poly-Flo **
Poly-Flo filter material is available in large rolls. POLY-FLO filter media is a non-woven polyester blend which is UV resistant and very durable. It is tough enough to be machine washable and is resistant to compacting. Make your own bio filter using Poly-Flo for the filtering media. Building your own Bio-filters is not too tough for the average handy person. You need the container and the media. Here you will find a variety of media but not the container. For a 30 or 55 gal. barrel, locate a local car wash and inquire about extra soap barrels for sale.
It comes in various densities and thick nesses, and is the leading filter media in pond filtration. Recently I purchased several for $5 each. They are perfect in that they are made of none porous polyurethane. Wash out the barrels several times to rid of all soap. Cut out top. Use GE's Silicone II 100% Silicone sealant to any PVC or ABS plumbing connections. Be sure to let the silicone cure prior to using. (24 Hrs+) This is important.

Keep it clean with Poly-Flo the ultimate in pond filtration media.

What to choose?

For normal filter application, we recommend using a combination of coarse,  medium and fine density media for the mechanical filtering compartment, and coarse density media for the biological filtering compartment. This insures that biological media does not trap particulates and quickly become clogged, reducing it's efficiency.

The use of multiple densities of filter media for mechanical filtering with the water passing through the first coarse, then medium, then fine densities, insures the maximum possible filtration of particulates while minimizing clogging of the media.

For simple applications, a combination of coarse and medium densities is sufficient for mechanical filtering. Black has proven to be the most popular of the medium density medias, as it is the sturdiest and also has the best UV resistance.

Then again, if your tiered of cleaning filter media, why not consider installing a bead filter. Best backwash system available. The easiest filter to operate & maintain you will ever own! And dare we mention - no more mess washing out filter pads?

The Advantage Bead Filter

Indoor 100 gallon Rubbermaid tank with 30 gal. barrel bio-filter.  Water is pumped into top of media. The bottom picture shows finer media wrapped at the end of the hose to catch crud.

Then a full length peace of 2" Coarse media is stitched together to form a donut where the bacteria will grow... See top picture.

Water returns from bulkhead installed in side with return hose. Since the returning water is free flow, it required a larger 1 1/2" return line. The submerged OASE pump  intake permits reducing intake of water via a restrictor. This was important to adjust the amount of watering filling the home made bio-filter so it did not overflow.
